Engineering Marvel: Mercedes EQXX

"EQXX, EQXX, oh how I love thee! Let me count the ways... or better yet, let me make a list of all the reasons why the Mercedes EQXX is the bee's knees (or the cat's meow, or the dolphin's flipper, you get the idea).

  • It's electric, baby! No more trips to the gas station, no more smelly emissions. Just plug it in and let the good times roll.

  • The EQXX has more bells and whistles than a marching band at 26 Jan parade. From its advanced navigation system to its heated steering wheel, this car has it all.

  • It's got the looks, the brains, and the brawn. Just like a superhero, but without the spandex.

  • The EQXX is so quiet, you might forget you're even in a car. That's a big win for those of us who hate the sound of road noise.

  • Want to show off to your friends? The EQXX has got you covered. With its sleek design and advanced technology, you'll be the envy of the neighborhood.

  • Did I mention it's electric? That means you can save the planet, one mile at a time. And who doesn't want to be a hero?

  • Last but not least, the EQXX is just plain fun to drive. With its smooth acceleration and responsive handling, you'll feel like you're flying on the road.

So how does Mercedes achieve this all?

It is the most efficient car Mercedes has ever created now what's really cool about this vehicle is it gives us a starting point to basically determine what is the theoretical limit on efficiency and energy consumption for cars now let's say you want to create a vehicle that can travel a thousand kilometers f well it's very easy to do if it's a gasoline car you simply give it a large fuel tank if it's an electric car you simply give it a giant battery technically it is very possible but what if you want to do that as efficiently as possible so if you look at today's cars a 100 kilowatt hour battery pack is good for about 300 miles or about 500 kilometers so Mercedes set out to double this in other words take that same 100 kilowatt hour battery pack but instead of try traveling 500 kilometers travel a thousand kilometers okay so if we're to translate Mercedes goal into an energy consumption number what they are targeting is 10 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers driven

The Vision EQXX claims a drag coefficient of just 0.17, the lowest in the industry. A record that right now is held at 0.2 by both the American Lucid Air, and again Mercedes’s flagship EQS. The German automaker has been aggressively pursuing this target, which is very evident from their decisive change in design with the entire EQ model range.

Secondly, the range is set at 1000 km thanks to higher battery energy density, with the current record-holder still being the Lucid Air which is claimed to reach a range of 830 km thanks to around 105 kWh of battery capacity.

Overall, within the same segment of 4-door luxury saloon cars, there is a certain alignment in terms of charging and range performance, with two main differences. The first is that the BMW i4 (which is soon to be followed by the i7) is much cheaper than the competition, around half the price of most other models. So, a relatively lower performance can be expected. The second is that VW Group seems to have taken a different approach to this trend. Both Taycan and E-Tron GT, in fact, have a significantly lower range than their competitors but charge from 10 to 80% significantly quicker.

Different strategies could be more successful in certain countries and vice versa. While it seems that the majority of the luxury players are focusing on the increased range, the path taken by Porsche and Audi that here share the same platform too for Taycan and E-Tron GT could be the best as range anxiety fades.

Mercedes Vision EQXX anyway, sets important targets, and not just for range, but for weight as well. Because the OEM claims a battery pack weight reduction of 30% which is a massive deal, considering that batteries weight has been one of the major factors affecting car performance and driveability, especially for sporty models. Time will tell in which way the market will move forward, and major brands taking quite different approaches make everything even more unpredictable.

So there you have it, folks. The Mercedes EQXX is the perfect blend of luxury, technology, and eco-friendliness. And did I mention it's electric?
